Cash for Cars in Auckland: The Complete 2026 Guide to Selling Any Car for Top Cash
Auckland has more cars, more buyers and more "we pay top cash" ads than anywhere else in New Zealand. That's good for sellers, but only if you know how the offers are worked out. This guide covers what your car is really worth, how cash for cars compares with Trade Me, trade-ins and auctions, the paperwork the law requires, the tricks to watch for, and a step-by-step plan to get paid today.

Quick answer: Cash for cars in Auckland means a buyer gives you a firm price over the phone, collects your vehicle for free and pays you before it leaves your driveway, usually the same day. Most Auckland cars sell for $800 to $5,000. Complete scrap cars start at about $300, and late-model utes, 4WDs and premium European cars can fetch $12,000 or more. You need photo ID and proof you own the car. A good buyer files the NZTA notice of disposal for you. You do not need a WoF, rego, keys or a running engine.
| Auckland cash for cars at a glance | Typical figure |
|---|---|
| Scrap value for any complete car | From about $300 |
| Where most cars land | $800 β $5,000 |
| Late-model utes, 4WDs and premium European cars | $12,000+ |
| Time from first call to payment | Often under 4 hours if you call before midday |
| Towing / removal fee | $0, which is the industry norm with a reputable buyer |
| Paperwork you complete | Photo ID, plus the NZTA notice of disposal (the buyer can file it) |

What "cash for cars" in Auckland actually means
Cash for cars is a simple deal. You describe your vehicle, a buyer gives you a firm offer, a tow truck collects it at no cost, and you're paid on the spot by cash or instant bank transfer. You don't list the car, take photos, field calls from strangers or let anyone test-drive it around the block.
In Auckland the term covers almost every vehicle in almost any condition. It includes the tidy 2014 Corolla you've replaced, the Hilux with 450,000 km on it, the Mazda Demio that failed its WoF on rust, the written-off Aqua sitting at a panel shop in Penrose, and the Nissan Primera that's been parked on the lawn since 2019. Most Auckland cash for cars buyers are also car wreckers, so a car that can't go back on the road is still worth money for its parts and metal.
The same service turns up under many names, including car removal, scrap car removal, junk car removal and unwanted car removal. The truck and the phone call are the same. What changes is how your vehicle is priced, which we unpack in cash for cars vs car removal vs car wreckers.
Why Auckland is a seller's market in 2026
Auckland is home to about a third of New Zealand's population and a matching share of its vehicles. Three local forces keep cash offers here firmer than in most of the country.
- One of the oldest fleets in the developed world. New Zealand's light vehicle fleet averages roughly 15 years old, and most of it arrived as used Japanese imports. Parts for a 2008 Toyota Wish or a 2006 Mazda Atenza are in steady demand across Auckland, so the cars that donate them hold their value. Our NZ end-of-life vehicle statistics report has the full numbers.
- Trades and fleet demand. Auckland's construction, logistics and landscaping firms, many based around Wiri, East Tamaki, Penrose and the airport, are always replacing utes, vans and light trucks. That keeps prices for utes, vans and 4WDs high even when the vehicles are tired.
- Dense competition. More buyers within a 30-minute drive means more competition for your car. That only helps you if you compare written quotes, because bait pricing is common too (see red flags).
The result is that very few complete vehicles in Auckland are worth nothing. If someone tells you your car has "no value" and offers to take it away as a favour, get a second quote.
How much your car is worth: Auckland price ranges
Every offer is based on one of three values. A fair buyer pays on the highest value your vehicle can realistically reach.
| Value | Applies when | Typical Auckland range |
|---|---|---|
| Resale value | The car runs and is roadworthy, or close to it. It can be tidied and sold again. | $1,500 β $12,000+ |
| Parts value | It has major mechanical or crash damage, but the engine, gearbox, panels, lights or interior still have buyers. | $500 β $5,000 |
| Scrap metal value | Nothing worth salvaging is left, so it's priced on weight, metal prices and the catalytic converter. | From about $300 |
Indicative ranges by vehicle type
| Vehicle type | Common Auckland examples | Non-running / damaged | Running |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small hatch | Toyota Vitz, Mazda Demio, Suzuki Swift, Honda Fit | $300 β $900 | $800 β $4,000 |
| Sedan / wagon | Corolla, Axela, Tiida, Fielder, Accord | $400 β $1,200 | $1,000 β $5,500 |
| Hybrid | Prius, Aqua, Honda Insight | $500 β $1,800 | $1,500 β $7,000 |
| People mover / SUV | Wish, Estima, RAV4, CX-5, X-Trail | $500 β $2,000 | $1,500 β $9,000 |
| Ute | Hilux, Ranger, Navara, D-Max, Triton | $1,000 β $3,500 | $2,500 β $12,000+ |
| 4WD | Land Cruiser, Prado, Pajero, Patrol | $1,000 β $4,000 | $2,500 β $12,000+ |
| Van | HiAce, Caravan, Transit, Vanette | $800 β $3,000 | $2,000 β $10,000 |
| European | BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW | $500 β $2,500 | $1,500 β $9,500 |
| Light truck | Isuzu Elf, Hino, Mitsubishi Canter | $1,000 β $5,000 | $3,000 β $15,000+ |
These ranges come from our recent purchases. They're a guide, not a quote, and your make, model, year and condition decide the final figure. For model-by-model detail, see the 2026 cash for cars price guide and the top 20 cars that pay the most. If your car is near the bottom of the range, what is my scrap car worth? and scrap metal prices in Auckland explain the floor price.
The eight factors that decide your offer
- Vehicle type. Utes, 4WDs and vans earn more than hatchbacks of the same age, because Auckland trades want them and their parts.
- Make and model. Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Honda parts move every day. Rare models can earn less because their parts sell slowly.
- Year and kilometres. Newer is better, but type often matters more than age. A 2005 Hilux can be worth more than a 2015 Swift.
- Running condition. A car that starts and drives can be priced on resale. If it doesn't, the offer usually falls back to parts value, but it rarely falls to zero.
- Completeness. A missing engine, gearbox, catalytic converter or wheels takes the biggest single chunk off an offer. Be upfront about it.
- Damage type. Front-end crash damage with a good engine is different from a flood car with ruined electrics. See cash for damaged, flood and written-off cars and NZ insurance write-off categories.
- Weight and metal prices. These set the floor. Steel and aluminium prices move with global markets, and buyers pass that on.
- Your honesty on the phone. An accurate description gives you an accurate quote that won't be "revised" on your driveway. Hiding a noise from the gearbox doesn't raise the price. It just moves the argument to later.
Wondering whether to fix it first? Repairs rarely pay for themselves before a cash sale. Our repair or scrap calculator guide shows how to compare a repair quote with what the car is worth as it sits.
Cash for cars vs Trade Me, trade-ins, auctions and Pick-a-Part
Cash for cars isn't always the highest-paying option, and anyone who claims it is isn't being straight with you. It is the fastest and least risky. Here's an honest comparison of how Aucklanders sell cars.
| Option | Price | Speed | Effort and risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash for cars | Fair, firm, paid on the spot | Same day | Very low. Free pickup, paperwork handled | Any condition, especially non-running, damaged, old or no-WoF cars |
| Private sale (Trade Me, Facebook Marketplace) | Highest for tidy, warranted cars | 1β6 weeks | High. Listings, no-shows, test drives, scams, after-sale complaints | Recent, roadworthy cars where time doesn't matter |
| Dealer trade-in | Usually lowest, often folded into the new car's price | Same day | Low, but only if you're buying from that dealer | Convenience when you're upgrading |
| Auction (e.g. Turners) | Varies. Fees and the reserve both affect it | 1β3 weeks | Medium. Fees, no guaranteed sale, you deliver the car | Mid-value running cars |
| Self-serve yards (e.g. Pick-a-Part) | Low, mostly scrap-based | Days | Medium. Often you arrange or pay for delivery | Scrap cars if you can deliver them yourself |
We run the numbers in more depth in cash for cars vs private sale and cash for cars vs Pick-a-Part, Turners and auction. As a rule of thumb, if your car is under about eight years old, has a fresh WoF and you can wait a month, try a private sale first. For almost anything else, cash for cars gets you more once you count your time, fees and risk. If you're curious how buyers can still make a margin, how cash for cars companies make money explains the economics openly.
How to sell your car for cash in Auckland: 8 steps
- Gather the details. You'll need the make, model, year, approximate kilometres, plate number and an honest note of what's wrong with it. A few phone photos help.
- Check ownership and finance. Make sure the car is registered in your name, or that you can prove you're entitled to sell it. Run a PPSR search if there's any chance money is still owed on it (see the law).
- Get two or three written quotes. Ask each buyer for a text or email that states the price, confirms there's no towing fee, and gives their business name.
- Ask the three verification questions. What's your registered business name? Do you file the NZTA notice of disposal? Do you pay before the car is loaded? The answers should be instant and clear.
- Book the pickup. Call before midday for same-day collection in most of our area. Tell the buyer about access issues such as steep driveways, no keys, flat tyres or basement carparks. Hard-to-reach pickups are routine if the driver knows in advance.
- Prepare the car. Remove personal items, toll tags, child seats and your garage remote. Take off the number plates only if your buyer asks. Most cash for cars buyers handle plates as part of the disposal.
- Get paid, then sign. Count the cash, or confirm the transfer has landed in your account, before the vehicle is loaded. Then sign the sale paperwork.
- Close it out. Make sure the notice of disposal has been filed, either by checking with NZTA or by keeping the buyer's confirmation. Cancel your insurance and claim any registration (licence) refund that's due.

The paperwork and the law, in plain English
NZTA notice of disposal
When you sell a vehicle to a trader, wrecker or dismantler, the seller must tell Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). Until that's done, you remain the registered person, so you're liable for speed camera and parking infringements, tolls and even towing or storage costs if the car is later abandoned. A reputable Auckland buyer files the notice of disposal with you on the day. If a buyer is vague about it, walk away. Our NZTA notice of disposal guide walks through it step by step.
No WoF or rego? No problem
You can legally sell a car with an expired Warrant of Fitness or lapsed registration. It just can't be driven on the road, which is why the buyer tows it. Details are in selling a car without a WoF or rego.
Money owing: the PPSR
If the car has a secured loan against it, the lender's interest is recorded on the Personal Property Securities Register and stays with the car, not with you. It has to be cleared, usually from the sale proceeds, before or at the time of sale. See selling a car with finance owing.
Car not in your name
Deceased estates, cars left by ex-partners or tenants, and abandoned vehicles can all be sold. You just need the right proof. Our guide to selling a car that isn't in your name lists the documents for each situation.
Consumer protection that's on your side
Businesses that regularly buy and resell vehicles generally have to be registered under the Motor Vehicle Sales Act 2003, and the register is free to search. The Fair Trading Act 1986 bans misleading conduct, so a "$500 for any car" ad that becomes $150 at the kerb, or "free removal" that turns into a towing deduction, can be reported to the Commerce Commission. Business sellers should also read selling a company vehicle: GST and depreciation.
Red flags: how to spot a bad Auckland car buyer
Most Auckland buyers are honest. A few rely on the fact that, once a tow truck is in your driveway, most people would rather accept a lower price than start again. Watch for these signs:
- A phone price far above everyone else's that comes with "subject to inspection". It's the classic bait-and-switch.
- A towing, admin or "environmental" fee mentioned only on arrival.
- "We'll pay once it's weighed at the yard." For a car, the price should be fixed upfront.
- A payment screenshot instead of money in your account. Screenshots prove nothing.
- No business name, no address and no written quote. Just a mobile number and a first name.
- Pressure to skip the notice of disposal, or "we'll sort the paperwork later".
- Any request for you to pay a deposit, booking fee or fuel levy. A real buyer never asks for this.

Getting paid safely
The rule hasn't changed in fifteen years: you're paid before the car goes on the truck. Count cash in front of the driver, in daylight, with someone else home if you can. If you're paid by bank transfer, wait until the money appears in your account, not just on the buyer's phone. Never accept an overpayment with a request to refund the difference. Keep a written record with the buyer's business name, the plate, the date and the amount.

Three real-world Auckland examples
These are typical of the jobs we do every week. The figures are illustrative.
| Vehicle | Situation | Priced on | Typical offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2009 Toyota Corolla Fielder, 240,000 km | Runs, WoF expired over rust in a sill. Owner in Papatoetoe has a new car. | Resale or parts | $1,200 β $2,200 |
| 2012 Ford Ranger XLT, 310,000 km | Blown head gasket. Sitting at a Takanini workshop with a $6,000 repair quote. | Parts (strong demand) | $3,000 β $5,500 |
| 2003 Nissan Primera, no keys | Deceased estate in Howick, flat tyres, untouched for four years. | Scrap plus parts | $300 β $600 |
Notice that none of these cars needed a WoF, a running engine or a listing. Each one was collected for free, paid for before it was loaded, and the notice of disposal was filed on the day. For Japanese imports in particular, see Japanese import cash for cars. For European makes, see European cash for cars. For EVs and hybrids, see EV and hybrid cash for cars. For commercial vehicles, see cash for utes and 4WDs.
What happens to your car after it's collected
A car that can go back on the road is checked, repaired where it makes sense and resold. Everything else goes through the dismantling process. Fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, refrigerant and the battery are removed and disposed of properly. Reusable parts are tested and sold to Auckland workshops and DIY repairers. The stripped shell is then crushed and sent for metal recycling, and up to about 75β80% of a typical car by weight can be recovered.
That's better for Auckland than a car leaking oil into a backyard in Mangere or being dumped on a Franklin back road. We explain the whole journey in what actually happens to your car at the wreckers.

Frequently asked questions
How does cash for cars work in Auckland?
You describe your vehicle by phone or online form and get a firm offer. A tow truck collects it for free, often the same day, and you are paid by cash or bank transfer before the car is loaded. The buyer completes the NZTA notice of disposal with you, so you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
How much cash can I get for my car in Auckland?
Most cars in Auckland sell for between $800 and $5,000. Complete scrap cars start at about $300, while late-model utes, 4WDs, vans and premium European cars can reach $12,000 or more. The vehicle type, make, model, year, condition and completeness decide where your car lands.
Do you buy cars that don't run or have no WoF?
Yes. Non-running, unregistered, no-WoF, crashed, flood-damaged and written-off cars are all bought. A car that can't be driven is towed for free, and it's still worth money for its parts and metal.
Is car removal free in Auckland?
With a reputable cash for cars buyer, yes. Removal should be free and included in the offer, even for cars with no keys or flat tyres. Be wary of any buyer who adds a towing or admin fee when they arrive.
What documents do I need to sell my car for cash in Auckland?
You need photo ID and proof that you own the car or are entitled to sell it. The NZTA notice of disposal must be filed when you sell to a trader or wrecker, and a good buyer does this with you on the day. If money is owed on the car, the finance must be cleared as part of the sale.
How quickly can I get paid?
Often on the same day. If you call before midday, collection and payment usually happen within a few hours in our South and East Auckland and Franklin service area.
Is cash for cars better than selling on Trade Me?
For a recent, tidy car with a fresh WoF, a private sale on Trade Me may pay a little more if you can wait weeks and handle buyers. For older, damaged, non-running or no-WoF cars, cash for cars usually pays more once you count fees, time and risk, and it is far faster.
Can I sell a car that still has finance owing?
Yes, but the lender's security interest recorded on the PPSR must be paid off, usually from the sale money, so the buyer gets clear title. Get a payout figure from your lender before you call.
Which areas of Auckland do you cover?
We collect free from all 61 suburbs across South Auckland, East Auckland and Franklin, including Manukau, Manurewa, Papakura, Papatoetoe, Otahuhu, Mangere, Otara, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush, Takanini, Pukekohe and Waiuku. If you're elsewhere in Auckland, call and we'll confirm straight away whether we can collect.
How do I know a cash for cars buyer is legitimate?
Ask for a written quote with a business name and no towing fee, check that they file the NZTA notice of disposal, and insist on payment before the car is loaded. Avoid buyers who want to pay after weighing, show a payment screenshot instead of real funds, or ask you for any kind of fee.
Price ranges in this guide are indicative, based on our recent Auckland purchases, and are not a quote. Your offer depends on the vehicle's make, model, year, condition, completeness and current metal prices. Legal information is general guidance, not legal advice.
