How to Claim a Rego & RUC Refund After Selling Your Car
Selling or scrapping your car in South Auckland? You may be owed a refund on unused registration and road user charges (RUC). Here is exactly how to claim it in 2026.

Most people who scrap or sell a car never realise there's money sitting on the table. If you've prepaid registration or road user charges (RUC) that you won't use, NZTA can refund the unused portion back to you. It's not automatic β you have to claim it. Here's the plain-English version for South Auckland sellers in 2026.
Registration Refund β The Basics
When you dispose of a vehicle, you can apply to Waka Kotahi NZTA for a refund of the unused balance of your vehicle licence (rego). If you paid for 12 months and dispose of the car after 4, the remaining months can be refunded, subject to a small administration fee.
- You generally need to have filed a notice of disposal (or put the rego on hold) first.
- The refund is calculated on complete unused months remaining.
- An administration fee applies, so very small balances may not be worth claiming β but larger ones often are.
RUC Refund β Often the Bigger One
If your car is a diesel (or otherwise pays road user charges), you buy RUC in advance in distance blocks. When the vehicle is disposed of, you can claim a refund on the distance you paid for but never travelled. For diesel utes and 4WDs β extremely common in South Auckland β this can be a meaningful sum, because RUC is bought in 1,000 km blocks and people frequently have a big unused balance.
To work out your unused RUC: take the distance licence you hold, subtract the vehicle's actual odometer reading, and the difference is potentially refundable.
Step-by-Step: Claiming Your Refund
- Note your odometer reading on the day the car leaves. Take a photo β this is your evidence for the RUC calculation.
- Dispose of the vehicle properly. When we collect your car we complete the notice of disposal on the spot.
- Apply to NZTA for the registration and/or RUC refund β online, by phone, or at an agent (VTNZ, VINZ, AA).
- Provide your details β plate, odometer reading, and a bank account for the refund.
- Receive the refund to your nominated account.
Don't Forget These
- Cancel your insurance on the vehicle once it's gone β another common refund people forget.
- Remove the car from any toll account so you're not auto-charged.
- Keep your disposal record in case you need to prove the disposal date.
How We Help
We're not NZTA, so we can't process the refund for you β but on every South Auckland pickup we make sure you have what you need to claim it: we complete the disposal, we record the odometer with you, and our team will point out when a RUC balance looks worth chasing. It's the kind of small thing that separates a buyer who's looking after you from one who just wants the car gone.
