As the early imports age, more owners are asking the same question I hear every week: what is my EV or hybrid actually worth now the battery is tired? Here is an honest, local answer for 2026.
EVs and Hybrids Are Not Scrap — Even With a Dead Battery
The single biggest myth is that a hybrid or EV with a degraded battery is worthless. It isn't. These vehicles carry serious value in places a normal car doesn't:
- The battery pack itself — even a "dead" pack usually has good modules that are reconditioned or resold. A Leaf or Prius pack has real second-hand demand in NZ.
- Electric motors and inverters — high-value, low-failure components with strong parts demand.
